Vilniuje koncertavusi grupė „Slade“ Lietuvą sumaišė su Latvija

"Vilniuje prasidėjo net keturis vakarus gerbėjus visoje Lietuvoje džiuginsiantis trijų scenos grandų – britų roko žvaigždžių „Slade“ ir „Sweet“ bei romantiškojo vokiečio Thomo Anderso – koncertinis turas. Susirinkę gerbėjai galėjo išgirsti senas-geras ir kiekvieno melomano širdį glostančias dainas.

Vilniaus Pramogų arenoje vykusiame koncerte pirmieji savo muzikinę programą groti pradėjo rokeriai „Slade“. Šie vos užlipę ant scenos nesismulkino ir ėmė šaudyti geriausias savo dainas – „House down“, „Back ome“, o kolonėles draskė trečiuoji daina „Far far away“.

"Grupės "Slade" lyderis Dave’as Hillas sako, kad jau dabar džiaugiasi būsimąja kelione į Lietuvą.

Man patinka apsižiūrėti, kur esame apsistoję."

Jo mėgstamiausi kūriniai – "My oh my", "Far far away" ir, žinoma, "Merry Christmas Everybody". Visus juos bus galima išgirsti ir koncerte Kaune.

"Mes ne tokie"

Paklaustas, ar pateikė organizatoriams kokių nors reikalavimų sąrašą, D.Hillas susimąstė.

"Ne, mes ne tokie. Ketiname mėgautis viešnage, o ne ieškoti priekabių. Mums nereikia specialių dalykų, specialaus maisto", – tikino muzikantas.

Jis juokdamasis pridūrė, kad visi galvoja, jog grupės "Slade" nariai gers degtinę.

"Bet aš labiau mėgstu vyną. Degtinė man per stipri", – sakė D. Hillas.

Jis patraukė pečiais paklaustas, ką mano apie lietuvišką muziką – nėra šios girdėjęs.

"Bet, manau, lietuviai kuria gerą muziką, nes jų geras skonis – klausosi mūsų", – šmaikštavo gitaristas, laisvalaikiu mėgstantis skaityti poeziją, sodininkauti, stebėti, kaip dvejų metų anūkas mokosi groti gitara.

"Slade" – jau 46-eri

1966-aisiais įkurta "Slade" yra daugiausia aštuntajame dešimtmetyje singlų D.Britanijoje pardavusi britų grupė. Populiariausi hitai – "Coz I Love You", "Mama Weer All Crazee Now", "Cum on Feel the Noize", "My Oh My", "Radio Wall of Sound" ir amžina Kalėdų daina "Merry Christmas Everybody".

Veteranų šou: grupė „Slade“ Vilniuje ieškojo Latvijos

Lrytas 28.12.2012:

Maždaug dviems tūkstančiams žiūrovų ši klaida, regis, ne itin rūpėjo – senojo roko mėgėjai įsijautę kartu su grupe plėšė „Cuz I Luv You“, „My Oh My“, „Cum On Feel The Noize“, „Mama Weer All Crazee Now“ ir kitus iškraipytais angliškais žodžiais pavadintus hitus iš aštuntojo dešimtmečio. Jų pagalbos kartais prireikdavo ir „Slade“ dainininkui Malui McNulty, kuriam kiek sunkiai sekėsi tvarkytis su dainos „My Oh My“ melodija.

Netobulumus atpirko nuoširdumas. Pasirodymo pabaigoje „Slade“ pasipuošė Kalėdų Senelių kepurėmis ir sugrojo dainą, be kurios jos pasirodymai neapsieina net ir vidurvasarį – kalėdinį sveikinimą „Merry Xmas Everybody“.

...

„Tai – gal ir neįprastas sprendimas, bet įsitikinome, kad vyresnė publika, kuri mėgsta „Slade“, mielai klausosi ir šio atlikėjo“, - sakė koncerto rengėjas Remigijus Knabikas.

Jo žodžius patvirtino žiūrovų elgesys – po „Slade“ ir „Sweet“ pasirodymų niekas nesiskirstė.

...

Keliaujanti užsienio muzikantų komanda Lietuvoje aplankys dar trijų miestų arenas – šeštadienį lankysis Kaune, sekmadienį – Klaipėdoje, o Naujuosius metus sutiks koncertu Šiauliuose."

A Slade story and "history" for the Boxing Day

26.12.2012 Ilpo: The morning of the Boxing Day was a bit cold (-19  degrees, and 70 cm of snow) here in Helsinki, and we decided to stay inside  for a while. I found a nice Slade story in Malcolm Wyatt's blog, writewyattuk (and now a Finnish swing version of "Merry Xmas Everybody" by Tuomo Prättälä in the air on Radio Suomi):

"On the weekend BBC4 rightly celebrated the festive glory that is Slade – with a dusted-off documentary, songs from the Beeb archive songs, and the first terrestrial screening of the wondrous Flame for many moons – writewyattuk decided it was time to bang Don Powell’s bass drum again for Wolverhampton’s finest

...

There were some less than great singles in later days, but Slade made perfect pop for a few years and left an indelible impression on me and many others. That legacy should never be forgotten."

The Top 10 biggest selling Christmas songs of all time

The Official charts 25/12/2012 by Dan Lane:

The Top 10 biggest selling Christmas songs of all time!

"To celebrate Christmas 2012, today the Official Charts Company reveal the Top 10 biggest selling Christmas songs of all time.

With more records sold in the run up to Christmas than a typical chart week, the Christmas Number 1 is THE chart topper every artist wants to achieve. And it has been this way since the Official Singles Chart began 60 years ago.

...

However, not all of the biggest selling Christmas singles have been to Number 1 (two in the Top 10 peaked at Number 2, and one peaked at Number 5), and not all of the biggest selling Christmas singles have necessarily been, well, Christmassy.

To celebrate Christmas 2012 and 60 years of the Official Singles Chart, the Official Charts Company reveal the biggest selling Christmas songs of all time. These tracks may or may not have religious overtones, but have nevertheless captured the essence of what this special time of year is about.

At Number 1 on the countdown is Band Aid's Do They Know It's Christmas? - the landmark charity single helmed by Bob Geldof and Midge Ure to help raise funds and awareness for the 1984 Ethiopian famine. Do They Know It’s Christmas? has sold a staggering 3.7 million copies to date and is the second biggest selling single of all time.

The Top 5 is completed by Slade’s Merry Christmas Everybody at Number 4, which has sales of 1.21 million copies to date."

The full Top 10 is as follows:

"Christmas jingles jangle my nerves"

"I’VE been avoiding shopping in the past couple of weeks. Apart from the fact that I’ve been far too busy to spare much of a thought for Christmas-related stuff (I know, I know – bah, humbug) it’s the tinny Christmas music that’s squirting out all over shop floors that I can happily run a mile from.

Every time I hear Merry Christmas Everybody! from Slade, I can’t help but conjure up a mental picture of Dave Hill, the one with the ridiculous non-fringe haircut, the big-tooth grin and the spangly platform boots that he always looked he was about to fall off. He certainly wasn’t a pin-up on my bedroom wall, nor was fellow member Noddy Holder, come to that.

Slade held the number-one spot in the UK charts over Christmas 1973 with their offering and many of the Christmas tunes we hear today are from that era – probably because we were all desperate to have something to cheer us up in what proved to be a dark decade in more ways than one. Power cuts, strikes, rubbish lining the streets – you name it, we had it.

...

But there’s a real risk that it could be the London market trader known simply as the £1 Fish Man who for reasons not all together clear became a viral sensation in the summer. As long as he doesn’t wear a Mr Blobby suit or dance around in Dave Hill’s platforms..."

The Fife Today 16.12.2012:

Slade: Still crazee after all these years

Hoarder Next Door Christmas special

"Hoarder Next Door Christmas special

(Friday, BBC4, from 9.00 p.m.)

IF Slade had only ever released ‘Merry Christmas Everybody’ they’d still be revered as a great band.

But beneath the faintly ridiculous 1970s glam rock outfits and shoes so high they defied gravity beat the heart of a stonkingly braw band.

Noddy Holder remains instantly recognisable to this day thanks to his thick West Midlands accent and those chops - seldom has rock ‘n’ roll witnessed such magnificent sideburns.

Slade were also Dave, Jim and Don and, in the 1970s, their thumping solid tunes with the badly spelled song titles endeared them to a generation of kids and annoy teachers everywhere. No bad thing ...

They then re-invented themselves on the back of the fabled ‘New Wave Of British Heavy Metal’ circa 1980 and did it all again with the storming ‘‘We’ll Bring The House Down’’ so this week’s retrospective is long overdue.

It kicks-off with ‘It’s Slade’ a documentary first shown in 1999, and then BBBC4 does what it does best and rummages in the archive attic for clips of the band appearing on everything from TOTP to Crackerjack!

And just when you long to take off your platforms and put down that mirrored top hat, they treat us to Slade In Flame, the 1974 movie in which the band play fictionalised versions of themselves in a band called Flame.

Enjoy the nostalgia, marvel at the quite bonkers outfits which married no-nonsense cloth cap northern clothes with 70s glam - particularly those sported by Dave Hill - but above all, enjoy the music. Sorry, the musik ..."

Slade's Dave Hill, soul singer Beverley Knight and comedian Lenny Henry launch Rock With Laughter in 2010

Express & Star 18.12.2012:

Comedy show Rock With Laughter axed as top acts snub invites

A popular Christmas comedy and music show which features a host of top performers and attracts thousands of fans has been cancelled.

"Organisers of the Rock With Laughter show blamed the economic climate and inability to attract the right calibre of artist. The show has been running for the past seven years and has always featured a string of high profile acts.

...

But this year the promoter Highfield Productions found they could not attract the celebrities they wanted for the LG Arena shows which had been due to take place this Friday and Saturday. In a statement it said: “2012 seems to be a very difficult year for everyone and sadly the producers of Rock With Laughter have taken the difficult decision to cancel Rock With Laughter 2012.

...

The show, which is usually a sell-out, had become a Christmas tradition for many Midlanders. Last year top comedians Sarah Millican and Graham Norton were rudely interrupted at the Rock With Laughter show, to each be given a top comedy award."

3.12.2012 UK Official charts: 80. (152.) Merry Christmas Everybody

"Merry Xmas Everybody ... Has entered the UK charts again this week at no 80 from last weeks no 152 ! And is sure to go higher next week. It has also entered the UK heritage chart at no 24 !

MXE also made the top 20 again on two occassions - in 1983 alongside "My Oh My" at no 2 and also in 2007 ... Long may it reign as the UK's most popular Xmas song! This is now it's 16th chart entry in the UK on its own merits. It's hard to believe that this song is 40 years old next Xmas. We will keep you all posted on its progress chart wise.

But lets not forget all the other great tunes sung by this band. Including this new entry Slade have achieved a total of 305 weeks on the UK singles chart so far in their career - including 20 weeks at no 1 with 6 singles - 3 going straight to no 1 on its first week of release. Also 4 no 2 singles and 16 top ten singles - 12 of those being top 5 ! You must agree this is a gigantic achievement.

The Slade single with the longest chart time was "Coz I Luv You" Slade's 1st no 1 - staying in the UK charts for 15 weeks - 4 of those at no 1. But did you know that Slade's 2nd biggest chart stay was with "Get Down And Get With It" - Slade's 1st chart single reaching only no 16 but staying in the UK charts for an amazing 14 weeks in 1971.

Lets also not forget the Slade albums! 3 x l.p's to reach no 1 with a 8 week stay at no 1. Also a total album chart stay of 216 weeks with "Slade Alive" released in 1972 staying in the chart for an amazing 58 weeks."

Thanks for the chart info to Wendy & Rod !

Keep Your Hands Off My Power Supply: The ballad of a rare American Slade fan

Tuesday, December 4, 2012

"Back in January 2011 I went to see Styx in West Wendover, NV. Right before Styx sang “Come Sail Away”, Lawrence Gowan, keyboardist and lead singer for Styx from 1999 onward, decided to give the audience a short quiz. He yelled out “Sweet Home Alabama” the audience shouted back “Lynyrd Skynrd”. Then he shouted out “Smoke on the Water” and the crowd shouted back “Deep Purple”. Then he shouted out “Cum On Feel the Noize” and the crowd shouted back “Quiet Riot”. Then Lawrence shouts back “Wrong! It’s Slade!” As much as I love Quiet Riot’s version of “Cum on Feel the Noize”, I yelled back “Hell Yes! Slade!” and Lawrence smiled back at me. I love the band Slade and I’m a huge fan which is exceptionally rare here in the United States.

My father discovered Slade via some exceptionally rare radio play in Salt Lake City back in 1972 back when FM was commercial free and played a lot of different and experimental music. He bought the album Slayed? and really enjoyed it, but by the time I was born he had not listened to it in years and it collected dust in his record collection…lying in wait for me to eventually uncover.
When my family got cable television for the very first time in 1986 I was watching MTV and they played the video for “Run Runaway” and I don’t know what it is, but the song just really blew me away. I had never heard anything like it in my life and Noddy Holder had by far one of the most unique voices to ever come out of rock and roll. Forgiving the fact that the music video is considered kind of cheesy by today’s standards, I thought “Run Runaway” was the coolest thing I had ever heard in my life and is Slade’s only top 20 hit in the United States (it literally peaked at #20) and at this point in time just seeing this music video on MTV was really rare. I wanted to buy a cassette of Keep Your Hands Off My Power Supply (the American version of the album The Amazing Kamikaze Syndrome) really bad, but at least in Salt Lake County forgiving the fact that the album was still in print at that point, it was still really hard to find. In the meantime I used to call the request line for KRSP/Rock 103 every couple of months requesting “Run Runaway” and every once in a while I’d be lucky enough to hear it.
I was at the record store with my Dad in 1990 and I was looking through Slayer’s section and lo and behold there was a tape of Slade’s Keep Your Hands Off My Power Supply mixed in with Slayer. I bought it immediately forgiving the fact that I only knew one song on the tape mainly because I knew if I did not buy it that day I would never see this tape again. I will never forget the first time I listened to this tape at 4:30am while throwing my paper route. It completely took me by surprise. The album opens with “Run Runaway” the full version (I had only heard the radio/video edit version) and a song I already thought was pretty cool became in cooler. The power ballad “My Oh My” was way cool as well. However, where the tape really won me over was on side 2 with the songs “Keep Your Hands Off My Power Supply”, “Cheap and Nasty Luv”, and “Can’t Tame a Hurricane”. I know Slade did not intend these three songs as a suite, but I view them that way and they just kick serious butt. At age 13 I felt like I had discovered one of the greatest bands ever. Eventually, when I was going through by Dad’s records I discovered the album Slayed? which features “Mama Weer All Crazee Now” and “Gudbuy T’Jane” and I fell in love with that album as well (I copied it to cassette so I could listen to it on my paper route).
...
Slade, forgiving the fact that most Americans have either never heard of them or the few that have view them as a one hit wonder, they are one of the most influential bands in the history of Rock and Roll.
Slade was a huge influence for the band Kiss and to quote Gene Simmons "Slade was certainly our greatest influence; not only in the crafting of rock songs but also as performers. Before Slade, no one really knew @#$! about how to make an audience riot. We really got off on that. There would probably never have been us without them."

Ritchie Blackmore, former Deep Purple guitarist (and one of the best in rock history) said "They are a good group. I wanted to join them

They were also one of Joey Ramone’s (lead singer and founder of The Ramones) favorite bands, and he said "I spent most of the early 70s listening to Slade Alive! thinking to myself, "Wow - this is what I want to do. I want to make that kind of intensity for myself. A couple of years later I was at CBGB's doing my best Noddy Holder."

The one and only Alice Cooper once said "Slade was the coolest band in England. They were the kind of guys that would push your car out of a ditch."
...
In addition, Nirvana, The Sex Pistols, Oasis, Smashing Pumpkins, Motley Crue, Def Leppard, Quiet Riot, Queen, and countless other bands were very much influenced by Slade. As much as Slade never had the success in the United States as they did elsewhere, their influence as a band was very clearly felt by many established and aspiring musicians in the United States and all over the world.

About ten years ago I was walking through Fashion Place mall in Murray, Utah doing some Christmas shopping and over the P.A. I heard Slade’s “Merry Xmas Everybody” and I sang with it out loud was I was shopping. Frankly, I was just thrilled to hear a Slade song on the radio. However, since this day 10 years ago once malls and Salt Lake City radio start to play Christmas music this song is always in the rotation. I think it is way awesome that at least during the holiday season in America even Americans are listening to a great Slade song.

On a personal note, when I grew up there were a lot of bands I loved that thankfully many of my friends were into as well, but I stood alone on Slade. In my opinion they are the perfect balance between full throttle, straight up heavy rock and roll and pop music styling’s. Keep Your Hands Off My Power Supply was their brief moment of success in the United States, but thankfully this moment lasted long enough that I was able to discover and really enjoy Slade’s music. When I joined Facebook back in 2008 one of the first people to friend me was a good friend of mine from middle and high school and the very first thing he posted on my wall was “I heard Quiet Riot’s “Cum On Feel the Noize” the other day and I remembered how much you loved Slade” so I guess I rubbed off on my friends a little bit. Slade in my opinion should be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, but again because American audiences just did not embrace Slade at all I know it will never happen, but their contribution to Rock and Roll is very significant. I could not be happier to be one of the rare American Slade fans, but on the plus side based on the rock star quotes from earlier, I am in good company."

Glam rock legends on way, Whitehaven 22.6.2013

It promises to be a colourful night recreating the era when flamboyant outfits were coupled with outrageous make-up and equally vivid hairstyles.

Bruce Foxton’s From The Jam are also on the bill for the big gig at next year’s festival on Saturday, June 22.

 ...

You can expect Slade’s biggest numbers such as Cum On Feel The Noize, My Oh My, Mama Weer All Crazee Now and maybe even Merry Christmas Everybody.

Gerard Richardson, festival organiser, said he was delighted with the line-up.

“We wanted to put Slade on last year but they were headlining a festival in Germany and disappointed they couldn’t make it. They are looking forward to coming this year and suggested we get The Sweet along.

“As two of the most iconic bands in the last 40 years it’s going to be a real feelgood party night which is exactly what has consistently worked at the festivals.

“Both bands have a huge number of hits and along with From the Jam, who have a massive following, it’s going to be a great night of music.”

The original line-up of Slade with frontman Noddy Holder split in 1992 but original band members Dave Hill and drummer Don Powell are still in the band, joined by John Berry on bass guitar, vocals, violin and Mal McNulty on vocals and guitar.

The three bands will play for an hour each and tickets are currently available online only at www.thewhitehavenfestival.co.uk

Copeland Council leader Elaine Woodburn praised the festival team: “It’s difficult I imagine to build on many years of success and sign the variety of artists that the festival needs but the festival committee have yet again succeeded in getting blockbusters, (get it!) that will evoke memories in most people.

“It will be the only time that it will ok to scream Merry Christmas everyone in the middle of June. Out with my glam rock kit and roll on June. Well done to all involved.”

Top Ten Best Christmas Songs Ever Sung

4.12.2012 Emma Kelly, Ramp IE:

Top Ten Christmas Songs

"It’s December, so whether you like it or not, it’s officially Christmas. So this means that every radio station you can possibly tune into has replaced Rihanna with Noddy Holder, and you can’t do a thing about it. The Scrooges of the world will bemoan the lack of Ed Sheeran on 98FM, but those of us with a more positive outlook on the Christmas season see the December radio period as a beacon in the darkness of endless songs featuring Emeli Sandé."

3. ‘Merry Christmas Everybody’ – Slade

"Admit it, any time someone says ‘It’s Christmas’, you hear Noddy Holder roaring it in your head. They should put him on all Christmas cards beside Santa as a little glam rock mascot."

Scott Mills creates 'The Perfect Christmas Single'

"Scott Mills had a dream to release a Christmas single – and now that dream is becoming a reality. He’s looked to some of the most qualified singers and songwriters (including Noddy Holder off of Slade and comedian/composer Tim Minchin) for advice and he’s teamed up with Wise Buddah’s Studios and Jingles & Music Imaging and pop educators Frisky and Mannish to satisfy his “Christmas twinge” and create the ultimate Christmas single.

The journey Scott went on to create the song will be documented by Wise Buddah Content in a 60 minute show – The Perfect Christmas Song - that will air as part of BBC Radio 1 Stories on Monday the 17th of December. The single itself is called The Perfect Christmas Single and will be free to download on the Radio 1 website after its first airing on The Scott Mills Show on the 10th of December."

Will a BBC DJ create ‘The Perfect Christmas Single?’

A one-off documentary produced by content creators Wise Buddha will follow Radio 1 DJ Scott Mills as he works with a team of musicians to put together his own Yuletide classic.

London content creation agency Wise Buddah has been commissioned to make ‘The Perfect Christmas Song’, a one-off documentary for BBC Radio 1 about DJ Scott Mills’ (pictured, second from left) quest to create the ultimate Christmas single.

The 60-minute music-led show will follow the presenter as he gathers advice from established singers and songwriters – including Slade’s Noddy Holder and comedian/composer Tim Minchin – and then works with a team of musicians to put together his own Yuletide classic.
The resulting track, called 'The Perfect Christmas Single’, is scheduled to get its first airplay on 10 December during Mills’ show before being made available as a free download on the Radio 1 website.
...
Music and lyrics for the single are being written by comedy cabaret duo Frisky and Mannish with producers Marc Vickers and Jem Godfrey from Wise Buddah Jingles & Music Imaging. The track is being recorded at Wise Buddah Studios.”

No5 has all the answers, Nod hosting annual Midlands' showcase quiz

No5 Chambers team captain Nicola Preston picks up trophy after No5 wins Marie Curie Birmingham Brain Game

"Noddy Holder, formerly of pop group Slade, is used to number ones but he recently got to know No5 as the Steelhouse Lane barristers’ Chambers beat off all the competition to win the 2012 Marie Curie Birmingham Brain Game. The annual Midlands’ showcase quiz was hosted by Walsall legend Noddy, with special guests including Bill Oddie, Kay Alexander, John Altman and Ed James contributing to the fun at the ICC where the event was held.

A record amount of money was raised and teams from the legal and other business sectors competed. Nicola Preston captained No5 Chambers, which secured victory in a sudden death eliminator against Squires Sanders. The evening was rounded off by the news that the quiz and auction had raised a staggering £145,000.

This astonishing amount will go towards Marie Curie’s project to build a brand new hospice for the West Midlands in Solihull, costing around £20 million and due to open in January 2013. Fund raising activities, including No5 Chambers’ Ralph Lewis QC Memorial Cup – a popular fixture in Birmingham’s annual boxing calendar – have raised much of that amount but more is still needed...”

A Sound Reaction: Dave Owens

David Owens, Western Mail 30.11.2012:

"IT’S Christmas!” screeched extravagantly mutton chopped, top hat wearing, ’70s rock mammoth Noddy Holder on Merry Christmas Everybody; Slade’s you can’t escape it in any department store after November 1 festive anthem.

The glam rock royals’ yuletide earworm stands at the top of the tree as the ultimate festive rocker.

When is it acceptable to start listening to Christmas songs? Never.

Wales Online, Richard Beech 14.11.2012:

Not even St. Nick likes Slade
Not even St. Nick likes Slade

"Do you listen to Christmas songs in November, do you leave it until December, or do you try and avoid the jolly musical packages of festive spirit altogether?

Whether you like it or not, Christmas songs are beginning to take over the airwaves.

...

It’s inescapable, you can’t get from now to the other side of Christmas without hearing a Christmas song. It’s the twisted inevitability of 21st century life in the western hemisphere. You will hear a sleigh bell, you will hear a choir of angels, and you will hear that guy from Slade shout “IT’S CHRISSSSSTMAAAAAS”.

You will see a pop star you’ve neither heard of nor care about dressing up as Santa Claus in a new music video in an attempt to try and win a few new fans, and you will get drunk at the office Christmas party and end up shouting “IT’S CHRISSSSSTMAAAAAS” with that Slade record.

It’s going to wear you down, and your resolve will be tested every day, but the question is - when will you crack, when is it acceptable to start listening to Christmas songs?"
